The overnight tour to San Simeon started at Chile’s in Seaside on a sunny Saturday morning. Once everyone had arrived we headed down Highway 68 to River Road, then down River Road until the turnoff onto Fort Romie Road at Wrath Winery, to Mission Soledad, where we took a bathroom break and stretched our legs, and were joined by another member, making a total of 17 cars.

From there we jogged over to the freeway and headed south until the first Jolon Road exit, just north of King City, where we got off the freeway and headed through the California hills and pastures for 23 miles until we got to Fort Hunter Liggett and Mission San Antonio de Padua. This was a great spot for the picnic lunches we brought. We were able to take a look at this impressive mission and enjoy our lunches on picnic tables under the shade of a large oak tree.

The tour then headed over the Santa Lucia Mountains on Nacimiento-Ferguson Road, stopping at the top of the ridge for an expansive view of the ocean and the road below, to Highway 1 on the south side of the Regent’s Slide to continue south to San Simeon, where members had reservations at the Coast Riders Inn, with plans to meet for dinner at the San Simeon Bar and Grill.

San Simeon is home to Hearst Castle, Moonstone Beach, Piedras Blancas historic lighthouse and an elephant seal rookery viewing area. Members could visit any of these attractions Sunday morning or drive south to Cambria, which is a small town somewhat like Carmel but less congested, and walk around there.

Lunch on Sunday was scheduled in Cambria, followed by a drive through the hills around Paso Robles on the way to Eberle Winery for a wine tasting. Another optional stop near Eberle is the Estrella Warbirds Museum.

A great tour set up by president Mark!
