The Oktoberfest event on September 28th started for Monterey Bay Region at Chili’s in Seaside, where 9 cars left and headed north for Santa Cruz County. We rendezvoused with two other MBR members at the Summit Store on Skyline Drive, then continued on Skyline Drive to Highway 17, which we took to the Bear Creek Road exit, then got on Black Road.
Black Road has lots of twists and turns going through the redwoods, and a group of four cars including president Mark took a left turn when they should have turned right. The main group of seven cars stopped at a wide spot in the road to wait for them, then continued when they didn’t show up. The errant group of four made it to the Lodge before the main group due the wait and also due to a traffic accident where a car went over the bank on Highway 9, resulting in traffic being reduced to one lane at a time as the two fire trucks and one rescue truck worked the scene.
Eventually everybody made it to Brookdale Lodge, where Loma Prieta Region had everything ready. We had a bratwurst buffet with apple pie for dessert, and a trivia contest.
Before scoring the trivia contest, we were treated to a history of the Santa Cruz Mountains roads by Scott Tucker of Loma Prieta Region, who showed pictures of what the roads looked like before they were paved, taken from his Facebook page of San Lorenzo Valley history.
The food was good and the company was great.
