Monterey Bay Region was officially chartered on March 10, 1961 – 65 years ago and 5 1/2 years after PCA was started in October of 1955. The charter document was sent to the president of the region and was kept in a file box with other documents including the articles of incorporation and bylaws. You can see these documents referenced in the January 1986 president’s message in the Montereyan, when the region was getting ready to celebrate its 35th anniversary. The file box was passed from president to president until at some point it was mislaid, perhaps in a closet somewhere, so it is no longer available. National did not keep a copy of the charter document, however they have provided us with copies of the initial correspondence between Bill Sholar of PCA and Werner Tonn, first president of Monterey Bay Region, regarding the organizing of the region. At that time Monterey Bay Region was split off from Golden Gate Region and included Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties.
